Last night’s big Final Piala Jenderal Sudirman championship match between Semen Padang and Mitra Kukar brought many of Indonesia’s biggest football fans, including President Joko Widodo, out to Senayan’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. In honor of the special sporting occasion, the army arranged for a team of paratroopers to skydive into the stadium as part of the pre-game spectacle.
Unfortunately, one of the paratroopers missed his mark and his parachute chords got stuck on the side of the stadium’s roof, leaving him hanging precariously as the festivities continued. In the above MetroTV report on the incident, the dangling paratrooper seems to be distracting President Jokowi’s enjoyment of the game.
Fortunately, the paratrooper was not forced to hang around for the entire game (also fortunate, he didn’t die). After about 10 minutes, two other military personnel were able to pull the paratrooper up to safety.
