Next week’s Asian-African Conference, which takes place from April 19-25, will bring delegates from 109 Asian and African countries to the capital and Bandung.
In anticipation of potential protests and terrorist actions, the police are not pulling any punches in securing the conference. In addition to thousands of regular police officers that will be on duty, they are also deploying 3,000 members of the elite Mobile Brigade Police (Brimob) special forces unit to secure the event.
Brimob’s head of operations, Leo Bona Lubis, said 500 officers from his unit will be working with the Jakarta Police to secure the conference while the other 2,500 will be on standby in Kelapa Dua, Depok, ready for rapid deployment.
“We will help backup the Jakarta Police in regards to all possible interferences Including disabling all threats that can thwart or impede the conference. Including the threat of terrorism,” Leo said as quoted by Tribunnews.
Leo added that troops had been deployed from Brimob’s anti-anarchist, riot-control and Intelligence units.
