Most would agree that the rise of the ojek (motorcycle taxi) hailing apps in Jakarta have been a godsend in terms of giving us more convenient transportation and courier options.
But now the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is warning that these online ojeks are at risk of being used to transport drugs around the city.
“We advise online ojek companies to urge the public not to use their services as a means to spread drugs,” said BNN Spokesman Slamet Pribadi, as quoted by Tempo today.
Slamet added that just this month, the BNN found three cases of courier companies being used to transport drugs around the city.
Of course, like other couriers, most ojek drivers don’t have any idea what they are transporting. So the BNN said they wouldn’t necessarily prosecute ojek drivers if they were caught transporting drugs.
“Our investigators won’t rush into determining punishments to couriers. We’ll look into how the couriers are involved first,” Slamet said.
But since these ojek drivers hold their customers’ phone numbers, we imagine it wouldn’t be hard for BNN to track down people who send drugs using online ojeks.
