Odd-even traffic rule to be expanded to include more of Jakarta’s major roads, including S. Parman and Arteri Pondok Indah, for Asian Games

The Jakarta Provincial Government and Traffic Police are planning to expand the capital’s odd-even traffic rule — in which vehicles with odd-numbered plates will be allowed to use certain major roads during rush hours on odd calendar dates and vice-versa — to include even more major roads in order to clear them of gridlock once the Asian Games rolls around in August.

As announced by Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Law Enforcement Unit Head AKBP Budiyanto and reported by Kompas, the biggest expansion stretches all the way from Jalan S. Parman in West Jakarta, through Gatot Subroto, M.T. Haryono, D.I. Panjaitan, Jenderal Ahmad Yani up to Cempaka Putih in Central Jakarta, measuring close to 22km.

The other three points of expansion are: South Jakarta’s Jalan Arteri Pondok Indah — Kebayoran Baru, Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said, and Central Jakarta’s Jalan Benyamin Sueb, Kemayoran.

Budiyanto said that trial of the expansion will be carried out during the first two weeks of July. After an evaluation during the third week, the expansion will be enforced starting the fourth week of July until the conclusion of the Asian Games (which will run from August 18 to September 2)

There will also be a slight modification to the times the odd-even rule will be in effect during that period. While most zones, including existing ones, will observe the normal 7am-10am and 4pm-8pm windows on weekdays, one hour will be added to Jalan Jenderal Sudirman-Jalan M.H. Thamrin in the mornings, making the odd-even rule on that stretch effective from 6am-10am during Asian Games.

Violators of that odd-even rule are subject to a IDR500K fine (US$35.22).
