“This is not a sharia state” Ahok says he won’t shut down bikini pool parties on principle

The infamous video invitation for the “Splash After Class” party that shocked Jakarta

News about a pool party aimed at graduating high schoolers, in which bikinis were included in the dress code, caused an uproar in the local media and condemnation from numerous parties, particularly the Indonesian Commission on Child Protection, which first spread the news about the morally bankrupt bikini bash.

All of the attention led to the event’s organizer, Divine Production, to cancel the ‘Splash After Class’ party and issue a formal apology.

For his part, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said he certainly did not  approve of parties in which underage children would be exposed to alcohol or drugs.

But he also said that he would not prevent venues or event organizers from holding similar bikini pool parties in the future, as long as they did not violate the terms of their licenses by doing things like serving minors alcohol.

“This is not a sharia state. If you want to be exposed or covered up, that’s your business. But if you violate the terms of a license, then we will shut you down. The rules are very clear,” Ahok said at City Hall today as quoted by Kompas.

Ahok was also quick to add that his administration would not tolerate drug use going on at any venue, saying that if any establishment was found allowing customers to enter with or use narcotics three consecutive times, they would be shut down immediately.
