‘Not bullets, just an egg’: Indonesian artists pay tribute to ‘Egg Boy’ Will Connolly

Tributes have been pouring in from all over the world for Australian teenager Will Connolly AKA Egg Boy, not least from the world’s largest Muslim nation where his egging of racist senator Fraser Anning has come to symbolize peace and anti-Islamophobia.

Among the many from Indonesia who have paid tribute to the 17-year-old, who has been the subject of many a viral meme since Anning’s egging on March 15, are some of the country’s most renowned artists who have created works to express just how much Connolly’s daring yet simple act of shaming hate meant to Indonesians and people around the world.

Comic artist Hari Prast, renowned for his political comics and cartoon illustrations of President Joko Widodo, yesterday posted this cartoon of Connolly mid-egging, with a peace symbol painted on the egg and a dove thrown in for good measure.

Webcomic Pengenjadibaik (which translates to “want to be good”) created a brief explainer of Connolly’s egging of Anning in comic form, only he censored one N in the senator’s name in the caption to make it seem like he was censoring the Indonesian word for dog (anjing).

Will Connolly, now known the world over as Egg Boy, shot to prominence after he smashed an egg to the back of right-wing Australian senator Fraser Anning’s head over the latter’s deplorable statement that last Friday’s mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, which left 50 dead, were the result of allowing Muslim immigrants into New Zealand.
