Instant messaging app LINE is making splitting the restaurant/cafe bill during your next nongkrong (hangout) sesh with friends a little less awkward by launching the aptly named SPLITBILL feature in Indonesia.

While there are already a plethora of apps able to perform the same task out there, LINE’s feature stands out in Indonesia in that it utilizes a nifty tech called Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

With it, all one has to do is scan the physical bill using the phone’s camera and the app will automatically digitize and list the different items and respective prices in the bill. The bill, including tax, can then be split based on what each person ordered.

“LINE SPLITBILL can help users count and split bills with accuracy and ease,” LINE Indonesia Managing Director Dale Kim said, as quoted by Liputan 6.

The feature was introduced after LINE Indonesia carried out a consumer behavior survey involving more than 24 thousand respondents in February. The survey showed a need for the feature after 69 percent said they dined out with friends at least once a week and 68 percent said they usually split the bill.

SPLITBILL is currently available within the LINE messaging app.
