No love on Valentine’s Day: police arrest 191 thugs on February 14

“Preman” thugs arrested in Jakarta.

While people in Indonesia were debating whether or not to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it seems the Jakarta police force had no choice but to work overtime on February 14. At least they have something to show for it, as the police arrested 191 “preman” thugs during operations conducted during the romantic holiday.

“We arrested a total of 191 people. After being processed, 25 remained in custody while 166 went to social rehabilitation,” said Jakarta Police Spokesman Grand Comm Martinus Sitompul today, as quoted by Merdeka

North Jakarta had the highest number of arrests with 59. Fourteen of them remained in custody while the other 45 were sent to social agencies.

Comparatively, Central Jakarta police only arrested one thug who was carrying two marijuana joints while driving his motorcycle without a license.

“Meanwhile there were no arrests in Depok, Bekasi City, Bekasi Regency, and Tangerang,” Martinus said.

We were somewhat surprised there was no record of chocolate or condom robberies during Valentine’s Day.
