Marriage proposals in Indonesia are usually more than simply saying “yes” to a proposal. Tradition often dictates that the groom-to-be’s family visit the bride-to-be’s family home, where the man must formally convey his intention to ask for the woman’s hand in marriage.
During this ceremony, the groom-to-be usually hands over a set of gifts, called seserahan in Javanese, to the woman he wants to betrothe. Since most ethnic groups in Indonesia adhere to patriarchal values, seserahan symbolize a man’s financial capability as a husband to support his future wife’s needs.
In the case of this adorably geeky couple, those needs appear to be ultra high definition gaming.
On Sunday, a Facebook post by a man named Ervan Pratama from the East Java capital of Surabaya went viral after he nerded up his seserahan for his fiancé, Tiara, by buying her several pieces of high-end PC gaming hardware.
Alhamdulillah diterima ♥️. Deg deg serr ngajak sekeluarga ke sana 😅. Tapi alhamdulillah sudah selesai dan syarat sudah…
Seserahan can be made up of items agreed upon by both the groom-to-be and the bride-to-be, so, for Ervan and Tiara, who are both avid gamers, these gifts make sense.
Ervan said the seserahan consisted of high-end PC gaming components such as a Gigabyte Aorus Elite B450M motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT VGA, Corsair HX750 power supply — all together costing more than IDR10 million (US$702).
Ervan said he usually plays first-person shooter games such as Battlefield 1 with Tiara and he wanted her to have the right gaming components so that they could play together.
“Whenever she feels tired and worn out after work, she can refresh herself when she gets home from work, either from playing games or watching films [together with me],” Ervan said.
“I don’t care what people say, my only intention is to make her happy.”
Ervan did not reveal when he and Tiara will tie the knot. Regardless, we wish them happiness in both their real and virtual lives together.
