National Police place troops on high security alert following deadly attack on Jakarta

The National Police has placed all members of the force on ‘siaga 1’ security alert level following the deadly blasts and gunfire in Thamrin, Central Jakarta, yesterday.

“Since 5 pm, we decided to put into effect the siaga 1 status for security all over Indonesia,” said National Police Spokesman Inspector General Anton Charliyan, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

In this case, siaga 1 means a high security alert level in which more officers are deployed to secure high profile potential targets such as government buildings, embassies, and places with a high concentration of foreigners, amongst many more.

However, the security alert does not affect citizens in the form of curfews or the temporary shutting down of businesses, for example. In fact, the police are urging citizens to go about their business as usual, albeit with a certain degree of added caution.

Anton also said that citizens should assist the police whenever possible, particularly in reporting suspicious people and activities in order to prevent future attacks.
