Musician Fariz RM sentenced to 8 years in jail for drug abuse

Experienced musician Fariz Rustam Munaf, more commonly known as Fariz RM, was sentenced to eight years in prison for drug abuse at the South Jakarta District Court yesterday.

Fariz said he was disappointed with the court’s decision.

“Personally, spending more time in prison is problematic because my work can’t continue and my income for my family is also threatened,” Fariz said after the sentencing hearing yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.

“In rehab, I would’ve been allowed to bring in musical instruments, so I can resume my activities and have a fixed income as well.”

Fariz RM’s sentence is two months shorter than that sought by prosecutors. His legal team hasn’t decided on whether they will launch an appeal against the court’s decision.

Fariz RM was caught smoking marijuana in his home in South Tangerang in January. A urine test revealed that he had consumed heroin, meth, and marijuana. The police also confiscated heroin and a bong from his house.
