Jakarta’s newly launched MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system may see a significant reduction in passengers once the 50% introductory discount on all fares ends in a few days.

“Starting May 13, [the fares] will return to normal,” MRT Jakarta Operations and Maintenance Director M Effendy told reporters yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.

To mark the service’s commercial launch on April 1, MRT Jakarta gave 50% discounts on all fares for the first month of the train’s commercial operations. But the promo was then extended by two weeks, in large part to encourage Jakartans to switch to public transportation and give them more time to get acquainted with the MRT.

The MRT has been a hit since it was launched, averaging 82,000 passengers per day in its first month. But Jakarta MRT President Director says the train company predicts a 39% reduction in passengers when normal fares are introduced.
