Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) just completed an investigation of bank accounts belonging to president-elect Joko Widodo. The result of their investigation might have been surprising for a large percentage of Indonesian politicians, but the fact that Jokowi turned up totally clean is unsurprising (to most people, but more on that later).
“We’ve done it [a search] of his accounts and Jokowi is clean,” said KPK commissioner, Adnan Pandu Praja at the organization’s headquarters on Tuesday.
Pandu explained that the KPK worked with the Center Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (INTRAC) to examine if Jokowi had any hidden accounts in foreign countries, as has been alleged by a number of parties.
The Commission reported that it was confident that the former mayor of Solo did not have any offshore accounts.
“We have followed up with INTRAC, and INTRAC could find nothing because there is simply no such accounts,” Pand added.
According to Pandu, the KPK did receive complaints about offshore accounts belonging to Jokowi. More than likely, those complaints came from members of losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto’s Merah Putih Coalition, who have made it clear recently that they plan to investigate Jokowi for alleged corruption that took place in Jakarta and Solo during his time as executive in charge of those cities.
Perhaps they were hoping to get lucky and find out Jokowi was actually corrupt so they wouldn’t have to go to the effort of making up some trumped-up, baseless charges that they could use to try to impeach the political upstart. Sorry guys, you’ll have to try harder than that.
