The Jakarta Metro Police have arrested a motorcycle taxi driver working for a ride-hailing service for the alleged murder of a 19-year-old woman at the Laguna Apartments in Pluit, North Jakarta.

According to the police, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Peri, confessed to the murder of 19-year-old Dini Oktaviani in her apartment on September 13. Dini’s body was found by her family when they went to visit her apartment on September 19.

According to the police, Peri told them interrogation that he had been invited over to Dini’s apartment on the day of the murder. There, he claimed that he strangled and suffocated her with a pillow “out of reflex,” though he didn’t say what his murderous actions might have been in reaction to.

Understandably, the police are skeptical of his admission.

“His reasoning was he strangled the victim’s neck out of reflex. But we’re not believing his confession just like that. We’re looking into this further,” said Grand Commissioner Nico Afinta, director of the General Crimes Unit at Jakarta Metro Police, as quoted by Detik today.

After Peri killed Dini, he stole several of her valuables, including her phone, TV, and jewelry before leaving her dead body inside the apartment.

Peri was captured yesterday, two days after Dini was found dead.

Peri was charged with violating Article 338 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) for murder, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and Article 365 of the KUHP for violent theft, which is also punishable by up to 15 years in prison as the victim died in this case.
