Motorcycle sales on the decline during banjir season

If there’s a silver lining to all of the floods that have inundated Jakarta over the past couple of weeks, it’s probably that the flood affected the sales of motorcycles in the capital. After all, Jakarta’s already banjir-ed with motorcycles.

New data released by the Association of Motorized Vehicles Industries in Indonesia (Gaikindo) showed that in January 2015, 502,783 motorcycles were sold in Jakarta.

That is a significant decrease from the same period in 2014 when 579,631 units were sold. Motorcycle sales were even stronger in January 2013 with 646,082 units sold.

“The decrease in motorcycle sales was caused by the floods in Jakarta. Floods disrupted the distribution system and affected sales,” said PT Yamaha Indonesia assistant marketing general manager Masykur, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.

“We admit Yamaha sales in January 2015 were slow. But in the upcoming months we’ll be racing to meet the targets we did not achieve in January.”

As horrible as this sounds, we hope that motorcycle sales in Jakarta remain low from now on. Apart from banjir, the other major problem in Jakarta is, of course, macet. More motorcycles on the road won’t help reduce traffic congestion in the city.
