The ban on motorcycles that extends from the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout to Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat has been in effect since December 17, 2014, but only at a trial level with offenders receiving mere warnings from police officers. But since ban the ban was judged a success by the city, it’s about to go from tolerant trial period to intolerant ticketing time.

“On January 18, we start policing with tickets,” Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Police, Martinus Sitompul after meeting with Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, at City Hall on Wednesday as quoted by Berita Jakarta

Martinus said the Department of Transportation is currently adding more road markings to the ban area so that motorcyclists can clearly see why they’re being ticketed.

City Police Commissioner Risyapudin Nursin said the penalty for motorcyclists who enter the ban zone would be significant.

“Those who violate the traffic signs will face a maximum fine of Rp 500,000 or 2 months in prison,” he said.

According Risyapudin, the city already has a prosecutor on standby to handle those motorists who violate the ban and try to argue it in court.
