A total of more than 200 homes located in Karang Anyar, in the Sawah Besar District in Central Jakarta, burned down yesterday evening as a fire ripped through the densely populated area.
Police say the fire probably started in one of the homes at around 4:25 pm on Monday. To tame the fire, 22 fire engines were deployed to the scene.
“In the meantime, fire spread quickly because most of the homes are made of flammable materials. The total damage and cause of the fire are still under investigation,” said Sawah Besar police chief commissioner Ronald Purba as quoted by Vivanews.
Ronald also said police officer were deployed to the scene to help evacuate victim’s valuables to prevent anybody from trying to run back into the flames.
