Minimarkets risk having commercial license revoked if caught selling alcohol by mid-April

In accordance to the Trade Ministry ruling, the Jakarta Provincial Government is advising minimarkets in the city not to stock up on type-A alcoholic products (alcohol content under 5%) from now on.

Head of Jakarta’s Small and Micro Businesses Agency, Joko Kundaryo, said minimarkets should be alcohol-free by April 16, 2015.

“They have until April 16 to sell [alcoholic] products already in stock. They can’t stock up. The heaviest sanction is that we can recommend [to the Trade Ministry] to revoke their commercial license,” he said, as quoted by Warta Kota on Saturday.

Joko added that the alcohol ban shouldn’t greatly affect minimarkets’ income. Of the 2,148 minimarkets registered in Jakarta, 50% sell alcoholic drinks, and they only contribute to 5% of the minimarkets’ income at most.

That’s all well and good, but the casual beer consumers are going to be unnecessarily inconvenienced by the alcohol ban in minimarkets.
