Members of President’s Security allegedly assault Tanah Abang head for removing street vendors

While the President’s Security Detail (Paspampres) must be willing to put their lives on the line to save the president, it seems that some of them don’t have the same level of respect for lower ranking public officials.

Late last night, two off-duty Paspampres sergeants, identified as To and Tu, went to the Tanah Abang District Office and allegedly assaulted District Head Hidayatulloh and a member of the Satpol PP police unit, Mail Kurniawan.

Witnesses say the Paspampres members were unhappy that Hidayatulloh and the Satpol PP had removed kaki lima street vendors from the streets of Tanah Abang earlier that day. Supposedly, they were acting on the belief that one of the vendors that had been removed belonged to the family of a Paspampres member.

While not confirming the motive behind the assault, the Tanah Abang Police at least confirmed that it did take place.“Yes, they (Paspampres members) came to [the District] Office and carried out the assault,” said Commissioner Mustakim, head of the Crime Investigation Unit at the Tanah Abang Police, as quoted by Kompas today.

Mustakim added that the police confiscated a folding knife and an airsoft gun from To and Tu, though it wasn’t clear if they used weapons during the assault.

Both Hidayatulloh and Mail reportedly suffered light injuries from the beating. It appears neither is going to press charges against To and Tu.

“They all wanted a peaceful settlement. They only received light injuries,” Mustakim said.
