You have probably heard that members of the Indonesian military and police tend to not get along so well and conflicts between the two groups happen on a fairly regular basis. The latest incident of military on police violence took place on Saturday, when a member of the navy got more than a little upset after getting ticketed by the police.
The incident began when the perpetrator, identified by police as BEP, was riding on a motorcycle with his wife in the Pondok Gede neighborhood of Bekasi. BEP was stopped by a member of the Bekasi Traffic Police because his wife wasn’t wearing a helmet. They were then given a ticket for the infraction before being allowed to head home.
Police say that about 30 minutes later, BEP returned by himself to the same police outpost where he received the ticket to show the officer who had given it to him his navy ID card. But the officer had already left by then.
BEP allegedly became infuriated at this point and started trashing the outpost, breaking a window, AC unit and television in his rage. Fortunately he did not injury anybody during his rampage, but the police officers were apparently too scared to stop him before he fled the scene.
First Admiral M Zainudin, the Navy’s chief information officer, confirmed the news and said that BEP apologized for his actions.
“Yes, there was an incidents of vandalism. He has confessed and has also made a statement that he would repair the police station,” Zainudin said as quoted by Detik. He also assured the public that BEP would still be punished for his actions.
