Market of the apes: Hundreds of monkeys invade Bogor traditional market in search of food

No, these aren’t genetically modified monkeys with heightened intelligence bent on taking over the world. These monkeys are just hungry.

For the past week, hundreds of wild monkeys have descended upon a traditional market and human settlements in Ciampea, Bogor.

“There used to be a problem with jungle monkeys but usually there weren’t many of them. But this time the monkeys came in large groups of hundreds,” said a local man, Sarjiman, as quoted by Okezone yesterday.

The monkeys are thought to have temporarily migrated from their habitat in the nearby Cibodas Mountain due to food and water source depletion caused by the prolonged summer.

Traders at the region’s traditional market have been complaining about monkeys stealing their products, mainly food.

We hope the monkeys will be able to return to their natural habitat before some angry trader hurts one of them, or worse. Because, as we know from the movies, there’s a good chance they come back armed with spears while riding on horsebacks.
