Maritime Affairs Minister Susi thinks it’s weird coral reefs are currently the responsibility of the Forestry Ministry

Our much-discussed new Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Susi Pudjiastuti, says she has learned a number of odd things since becoming the head of her new ministry, one of the stranger things being which ministry is responsibility for coral reefs.

You’d think that coral reefs, being a vital part of the marine ecosystem, would be handled by, say, a ministry that deals with maritime affairs. But it turns out, coral reefs are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Forestry.

Obviously, Susi thinks she should be taking care of the coral reefs.

“One more thing I’m asking for, that might be possible, is the having the management of coral reefs returned to KKP. The reefs are now under the Ministry of Forestry, not us. It’s so weird that it’s like that. I’ve found a lot of strange things [since starting the job],” Susi said in front of members of the Regional Representatives Council in Senayan on Wednesday.

Susi said coral reefs management should be handled by her ministry because they are such an integral part of marine ecosystems.

“And because coral reefs exist in the sea. So it must be returned to us. If we are not given the authority, how can we protect our marine resources?” Susi said.
