Man tries to withdraw cash from ATM, gets ‘uang mainan’ (play money) instead

Some foreigners joke that Indonesia’s bright, multi-colored rupiah bills look a ;pt like Monopoly money. One man who was withdrawing money from a Mandiri ATM at a convenience store in Cipete, South Jakarta, on Wednesday was surprised to find out that one of the bills the machine spit out was, in fact, play money.

Satriaputra Sukarno showed off the photo of the fake money on his Instagram page on Wednesday afternoon along with the caption: “So… my father withdrew Rp 50k from the Mandiri ATM at Circle K in Cipete, it came out like this. Nice joke Mandiri, but pls give actual 50 🙁 “

Mandiri’s Customer Service instagram account commented on the photo soon after, apologizing for the problem and saying that the fake money could be exchanged for the real deal at any nearby Mandiri outlet along with the receipt.

This seemed to satisfy Satriaputra who noted in a later edit to his photo caption, “Mandiri does an amazing cust. service job. Case closed! Mine, at least. Shout out to any of yall who got monopoly money as well”.

Tempo confirmed that the incident occurred with Mandiri, whose corporate secretary, Rohan Hafas, said the incident could have occured due to errors made by the vendors charged with replacing the money inside the ATMs.

“If an ATM is outside of a bank branch, the money may be restocked by a vendor. We will contact the vendor and investigate,” Rohan told Tempo.
