Iwan Setiawan, a 35-year-old Garut, West Java resident, is currently behind bars for allegedly killing his own wife, 35-year-old Dewi Supartini, in such a morbid way that it has shocked many in Indonesia.

According to the suspect’s testimony to the police, the couple got in a heated argument on Tuesday evening over nothing more than a phone call.

“According to the interrogation, the victim made the suspect jealous. Earlier that evening, there was a man who phoned the victim,” said Garut Police Spokesman Ridwan Tampubolon, as quoted by Detik today.

Following their argument, Iwan stormed off and snatched Dewi’s phone before he got in his truck. Dewi followed Iwan into the truck, and the pair’s bickering continued as Iwan kept driving.

After driving about 1km from their house, Iwan stopped the truck and Dewi got off. She stood in front of the large vehicle to prevent Iwan from driving away, but he put his foot down on the gas pedal and ran over his own wife.

It was reported that one of the truck’s wheels crushed Dewi underneath it, killing her instantly.

To the police, Iwan confessed to the murder of his wife because he suspected that she was cheating on him.

Iwan may face up to 12 years in prison for domestic violence and murder. Despite his confession, police say they are going to carry out an investigation to determine whether Iwan ran over his wife deliberately or by accident.

Iwan was reported to the police for domestic violence in 2013, but had the charges against him dropped after he apologized and vowed not to repeat his actions.
