Police in Maluku’s Buru Islands made a grim discovery on Monday afternoon in a river near Waelikut Village: the head of Alim Nurlatu.

As shocking as the find was, it was not completely unexpected, as Alim’s headless corpse was discovered in his home the previous day. The river where his head was discovered was located not far from his home.

The Buru Island Police have arrested two people in connection with Alim’s killing — his second wife, Nola Labutal, and her alleged lover, Maurjana Nurlatu.

According to the police’s chronology of events leading up to his killing,  Alim discovered that Nola and Maujana were having an affair last week and the two were afraid Alim would kill them in revenge.

On Saturday, Maujana called Nola to plan Alim’s murder, asking her to tell him when her husband fell asleep. Maujana called her again during the early hours of Sunday morning and after she confirmed Alim was asleep, Maujana went to Alim’s house.

After Nola opened a side window, Maujana entered the house with a machete and killed Alim as he slept, cutting his head off.

“After removing his head, the suspect carried the victim’s head out through the back door of the house for fear that his blood would be splattered all over the place,” Buru Island Police Chief Adityanto Budi Satrio at a press conference on Tuesday as quoted by Detik.

Nola helped Maujana clean up the body and then he wrapped Alim’s head in some cloth before throwing it into the river.

Police soon received reports about Alim’s possible murder and found his headless corpse still in his home. Maujana and Nola were arrested on Sunday afternoon. In addition to Alim’s head, police also found evidence including cell phone messages and the machete allegedly used to commit the murder buried behind  Alim’s house.

Both Maujana and Nola have been charged with premeditated murder and potentially face the death penalty.
