Police in Jakarta have arrested a man accused of the murder of a sex worker in Central Jakarta, with the suspect admitting that he was inspired by news reports of similar crimes against women.

The victim, IWA (31), was found dead in a hotel room in Menteng and with her valuables stolen on Wednesday. The alleged murderer, AA, was arrested in East Jakarta on Friday.

To the police, AA confessed to booking IWA through MiChat — a messaging app synonymous with sex work in Indonesia — and met with her at the hotel, where he strangled her to death after they had sex.

“I planned to steal the victim’s valuables. And from there I thought about killing her to cover my tracks. I regret everything,” AA said during a press conference yesterday.

Police said AA was inspired by similar crimes against sex workers in Indonesia.

“He was inspired by news of women serving their clients at hotels. So he was inspired to chat [the victim] and possess her valuables,” Central Jakarta Police Deputy Chief Setyo Koesharyanto said.

AA also admitted to stealing from other people in the past few months and sold the stolen items to fund his online gambling addiction. He was never arrested for previous thefts.

AA has been charged with premeditated murder, which is punishable by the death penalty in Indonesia.
