A man in East Java’s Probolinggo city was reportedly shot dead by his boss while assisting the latter for his shooting practice, with police saying that the incident was purely accidental.
IK, who’s 30 years old, was helping to set up a shooting target by attaching cardboard to a coconut tree for DPI, who’s in his 50s, at a rice field area in Gerongan village, Maron district yesterday afternoon. After DPI repeatedly hit the target, it fell down and IK went to fix the cardboard up.
When he was about to return to his spot after fixing the cardboard, IK was shot by a stray bullet as he was still near the shooting target. Samiran, who heads Maron sub-precinct, said that the victim was approximately 60 meters from his boss at the time.
“Allegedly due to negligence. The pellet shot quickly and hit IK’s right chest. DPI, who was aware of this [accident], immediately brought IK to Condong Puskesmas (community clinic),” Samiran said.
IK’s wounds were reportedly severe, and he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the puskesmas. DPI, who owns a chicken farm, soon reported the incident to the police.
The victim’s family was shocked by the incident, especially because he was known to be a close and trusted employee of DPI.
It’s not clear at this point if DPI is licensed to own and operate firearms.
