Criminals have used sophisticated means to steal money from ATM machines in the past, so it’s highly surprising that 29-year-old Bambang Sutrisno managed to fool 12 ATM machines by just using a single wire.
Bambang figured out a massive security flaw in ATM machines. He’d first use the ATM to withdraw money like anyone would, but then he would keep the money dispenser shutter open using the wire and stick his hand into the opening to pry more money out.
“The suspect used his own ATM card,” said Jakarta Police Spokesman Mohammad Iqbal to Metro TV, confirming that there was no high-tech gadgetry involved in the crime.
Bambang had already stolen money from 12 ATM machines throughout Jakarta and Solo before the police finally tracked him down and arrested him this month. He managed to steal from Rp 100K to Rp 2.5 million in a single theft.
We’re no security experts, but perhaps ATM machines should be equipped with alarms that would sound whenever they’re being tampered with.
