An elementary school student in Indonesia’s South Kalimantan province was the victim of an extremely gruesome murder yesterday afternoon according to local police. Authorities suspect that the perpetrator suffers from severe mental illness.
According to police in Limpasu subdistrict, at around 12:30pm, the victim, identified as 9-year-old RA, was studying with his two friends in front of the alleged culprit’s house.
Suddenly, the alleged murderer, who has been identified as 35-year-old Akhmad, came out of his house carrying a machete, which he used to decapitate RA.
Police then arrested Akhmad after he was beaten up by locals and found the alleged murder weapon stashed among bamboo growing in his backyard.
Police have yet to determine Akhmad’s motive behind the alleged murder, but they believe that he may be mentally ill. Media reports have not yet mentioned if Akhmad has been made to undergo a mental health assessment to determine his culpability for the alleged crime.
That said, police have for the time being charged Akhmad with second-degree murder under Article 338 of the KUHP (Criminal Code), which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, as well as murder of a child under the Child Protection Law, which also carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
