A 49-year-old man, identified as SH, was arrested on Saturday in Kota Kasablanka mall in South Jakarta for carrying a gun.
Worryingly, we’re talking about a real gun as opposed to an airsoft gun, which is often the weapon of choice for petty criminals in the city. SH carried a 9 mm Sig Sauer 262 loaded with three bullets.
But that’s not why SH got arrested in the first place.
“He was apprehended for stealing bread from a store in the mall. The security guards grew suspicious and called the Tebet Police Department to investigate [SH]. When he was searched, it turned out he was hiding a German firearm,” said Ketut Sudarma of the Crime Investigation Unit at the Tebet Police Department, as quoted by Kompas today.
SH admitted to owning the gun, but he denied he was going to use it to steal bread.
“I wanted to buy bread. But the line was too long and I didn’t want to wait for a long time, so I just left [without paying for the bread],” he said.
SH said he bought the gun for Rp 2 million two years ago in Tanah Abang. He took it with him to Kota Kasablanka because he wanted to exact revenge on a man who owed him money who was in the shopping center at the time.
Thank goodness SH was arrested for stealing bread before he carried out his plan. Otherwise things could’ve gotten really messy in Kota Kasablanka.
