One Jakarta man allegedly went to extremes to humiliate and hurt a traffic police officer after refusing to accept a ticket for a simple traffic violation.

Police say they arrested a man, identified as Watoni, for allegedly assaulting an officer named Hermansyah Sitorus on the Kuningan flyover yesterday afternoon. Hermansyah stopped Watoni, who was driving a Suzuki Ertiga, for violating the odd-even rule.

“Vulgar words were said [by Watoni]. But he was still ticketed by the officer. The culprit did not accept the ticket and he reversed his car to run over the victim’s foot, resulting in a bruised right foot, and then he left after spitting on the victim’s face,” said Jakarta Metro Police spokesperson Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Merdeka today.

Hermansyah then reported the incident back at the police station. Watoni was soon located and arrested.

“Right now, the case is being handled by the General Crimes Directorate at the Jakarta Metro Police,” Argo said.

Under Indonesia’s KUHP criminal code, assault leading to bodily injury is punishable by up to 2 years and 8 months in prison, while assaulting a police officer is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Drivers violating the odd-even traffic rule in Jakarta are subject to a IDR500,000 (US$36) fine.
