Mall Taman Anggrek food court blast is gas pipe explosion, management confirms

Update: Police say at least six people were injured as a result of the blast. All of the victims have been hospitalized and are being treated for burn injuries, though the extent of which were not disclosed.


An explosion rocked West Jakarta’s Mall Taman Anggrek this morning, with the shopping center’s management saying that it was caused by a gas pipe.

According to reports, the blast occurred at around 10:30 am today at the mall’s food court on the fourth floor. Photos and videos of the immediate aftermath showed substantial damage to a section of the mall’s exterior, as well as damage inside the mall, with images of shattered glass and smoke filling up the mall circulating online.

As picked up by Kompas, the mall’s management has already identified the cause of the explosion as an accident in a written statement.

“A gas pipe explosion occurred on February 20, 2019 at 10:30 am at the Mall Taman Anggrek food court on the fourth floor. The explosion was caused by one of the food court tenants where there was ongoing construction,” the statement read, without elaborating further as to what triggered the gas pipe to explode.

The police are currently investigating the explosion, but the mall said business have resumed as normal in the shopping center as of this afternoon.
