LPG canister explodes after man lights cigarette during gas leakage, burning five

A 3 kg LPG canister

Beware; the LPG (liquid petroleum gas) canisters most of us use to cook in our homes can become the source of a deadly fire if we’re not careful.

A 3 kg LPG canister exploded in 56-year-old Sri Kistina’s home in Cilincing, North Jakarta on Sunday morning. The resulting fire burned Sri, her two sons-in-law Dwi Yulianto (30) and Triyono (38), her granddaughter Eka Pratiwi (16), and her guest Awang (55).

The people in the house at the time smelled a gas leakage yesterday morning and promptly shut off the canister valve, as there was insufficient air ventilation in the kitchen.

“Eka shut it off. I also opened the doors of the house,” Sri said, as quoted by Warta Kota today.

But enough gas had already collected inside the house at that point. Sri’s guest, Awang, set off an explosion when he lit up a cigarette inside the house.

The five people in the house suffered various degrees of burn injuries and are all being treated at the ICU in Koja Hospital, North Jakarta.
