Lippo Mall’s official Twitter shames customer for being poor in tweets, then says the account was hacked

The Twitter accounts of large business establishments are usually run by teams of sensible social media specialists, so netizen were suitably shocked when the official Twitter account of a popular Jakarta mall insulted a customer.

Yesterday, a customer at Lippo Mall Puri in Puri Indah lamented on Twitter the fact that she had to shell out an additional Rp 10,000 for parking because of the mall’s unclear parking system.

Soon after, the mall’s Twitter account replied with this incredibly insulting response (this is a screenshot, the actual tweet has since been deleted):

“If you’re poor, don’t go to malls, sister.”

The customer then tried to further explain her complaint, only to be shut down by yet another rude tweet from the mall’s account:

“Do you think we care?”

This little exchange quickly went viral on social media, with the hashtag #KamiKereLippoMall (We’re poor, Lippo Mall) becoming one of the top trending topics in Indonesia today.

As often seems to happen in cases such as this, Lippo Mall’s management today clarified to the media that their Twitter account had been hacked yesterday.

“We can confirm that we didn’t post [the tweets]. You can tell from the IP address, the person who tweeted yesterday used a different IP address,” said Nidia Ichsan, PT Lippo Malls Indonesia PR manager, as quoted by Detik today.

“So there was no fault at all on the part of our admins. We were hacked.”

At the very least, they should apologize for the poor IT security which allowed this hacking to happen in the first place. If it happened.
