Level 1 PPKM in Jakarta: New rules for malls, workplace capacity

The latest bi-weekly extension of the Enforcement of Restrictions on Public Activities (PPKM) protocol brought some good news for the citizens of the capital, as Jakarta’s alertness status has been downgraded to the lowest level in the four-tiered system.

The central government yesterday announced the latest PPKM extension, which will be in effect starting today until Nov. 15. Arguably the biggest talking point from the extension was Jakarta and satellite regions Tangerang City, Tangerang Regency, Bogor, and Bekasi Regency being downgraded to Level 1 PPKM, which contains the least stringent curbs on public activities.

Under Level 1 PPKM, malls and traditional markets can open to full capacity, up from 50 percent previously. Screening for vaccination and COVID-19 status using the government’s PeduliLindungi tracking app still applies, and children under the age of 12, who are not yet eligible for the jab, must be under parental supervision at all times.

Away from leisure, workplaces for non-essential sectors may now reopen to 75 percent capacity, up from 50 percent previously. Employees who work from the office must present proof of vaccination using PeduliLindungi.

Other updated rules include a 75 percent limit at houses of worship, tourist destinations, weddings, fitness centers, and major events like concerts.

Aside from Jakarta, several major cities have also been downgraded to Level 1 PPKM, chief among them Surabaya and Semarang. To qualify for Level 1 PPKM, a region must have, among others, an infection rate of below 20 out of 100,000 people, fewer than 5 hospitalizations for every 100,000 people, and at least 70 percent of the eligible population receiving their first COVID-19 vaccine dose.
