Legislator: execute Bali 9 duo swiftly and discreetly

The government has received support from the House of Representatives regarding the execution of Bali 9 duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. Trimedya Panjaitan, a member of the Justice Commission at the House of Representatives, is pressuring the government to carry out the executions sooner rather than later.

“The petition for clemency was declined, now the prosecutors must carry out the execution,” Tri said at the Parliament Complex in Senayan yesterday, as quoted by Jawa Pos

Tri said the decision for the death penalty is legally sound.

“It’s just a matter of time. There’s no need to make a big fuss [about the execution],” he said.

Tri added that it’s only understandable that Indonesia and Australia’s relationship would sour over the death penalty.

“[President] Jokowi must have calculated the decision based on economical, political, social and cultural factors,” he said.

Previously, the Attorney General delayed Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran’s execution. Many believe the Attorney General was pressured into the decision after Australia threatened Indonesia with an economic embargo and a tourism boycott of Bali.
