At least 163 Jakarta middle school students fall ill from food poisoning, allegedly after eating tainted tofu

Hundreds of students from State Junior High School (SMPN) 184 fell ill yesterday in Cibubur, East Jakarta, due to food poisoning after eating the nasi bungkus (rice boxes) meals provided to them at an event.

The students were attending a “jamboree” party sponsored by their school at Cibubur’s Bumi Perkemahan (campgrounds) yesterday. The organizers gave the students nasi bungkus, which are commonly served at events in Indonesia, and soon after eating numerous students began experiencing nausea, vomiting and some even reportedly fainted.

Police said the food was purchased from a catering service in Pasar Rebo. It is suspected that it was a tofu dish included in the meal that was tainted.

“From the information of one of the students, many felt strange after eating the tofu side dish, while those who did not eat it were okay,” said East Jakarta Police Chief Andry Wibowo.

Medical staff arrived on the scene to treat the students but after they realized how many children were affected they started rushing them to the hospital for treatment.

There have been no reports of students suffering further complications from the food poisoning.

Representatives of the Jakarta Health Department said they were investigating the case and the cause of the food poisoning. They said they did their best to monitor food safety at the city’s restaurants and catering businesses but that there were too many for them to make sure all were complying with the capital’s health codes.
