Not all “bules” in Indonesia are cashed-up oil and gas company execs that receive lavish housing, a company car and hazard pay. Many of the foreigners living in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, are English teachers who have been lured to our archipelago on the promise they can live like a king here on what would be a very modest salary in their home countries.
While those bules may make several times more than your average Indonesian, they will have to still have to make certain sacrifices and adjustments to get by here, as Indonesian Youtube star Sacha Stevenson explains in the description of her latest video:
Expat, foreigner, immigrant… whatever you think you are, in Indonesia you are a called a “bule”. Because Asia is the new “IT” place to be, I decided to make a video that talks about the reality of “bule” life in Indonesia. People look at white skin in Indonesia and automatically think $$$. This is not the case for the majority of foreigners who come here to teach English at courses such as EF. In the video I cover the cost of living in Indonesia, and also some pros and cons of being a Bule in this awesome country. INDONESIA! …oh…I forgot to mention…This video is pretty hilarious.”
