Lawyer, angry over ATM line dispute, grabs gun and points it at customer in Bogor minimart

After yesterday’s story about the drunk policeman waving his gun around, today we have this incident.

WTH is going on, is Indonesia slowly becoming America?

We joke, but only because this incident fortunately did not end in violence. However, there is no doubt things got extremely tense yesterday in a Bogor minimarket when lawyer Andi Kurniawan started threatening another customer with his firearm.

The convenience store’s cashier, Muhammad Khadafi, detailed the incident to Kompas, starting with how it began over a dispute about an ATM queue that quickly got completely out of control.

According to Muhammad, Andi was waiting in line for the ATM ahead of another customer named Bernadeta. Andi stepped a little out of line to look at some fruit near the ATM when the machine became available again. Bernadeta then went ahead to use it.

Andi then started yelling at Bernadeta, telling her that she should learn to queue. Bernadeta then tried to calm the situation down.

“She said, ‘Please sir, if you want to go first go ahead,'” Gaddafi told Kompas.

However, Andi was not having it and continued his rant at Bernadeta, who stayed quiet during his tirade. At that point, some other customers tried to intervene and tell Andi not to make too much of it, which apparently only angered the lawyer further. He went out to his car and came back carrying a gun.

With his firearm in hand, he asked who wanted to interfere with his affairs now and kicked the store’s counter. He then asked if anybody knew what a gun sounded like. He went outside the store and fired off a shot into the air.

He then went back in to confront the no-doubt terrified Bernadeta and told her she had to apologize and demanded that she kiss his hand, which she did.

Fortunately Bernadeta’s husband had been waiting for her in the parking lot and, seeing what was happening, went with a local ojek to report the incident at a nearby police station. Officers immediately came to the minimarket and arrested Andi, who did not put up a fight.

Depok Police Chief Commissioner Harry Kurniawan confirmed that the incident took place and said that, although Andi actually owned the gun legally and it was only filled with rubber bullets, the lawyer could still face up to 12 years in jail for dangerously misusing his weapon and threatening others.
