Living in Indonesia, we’re never short of “penampakan” (ghost sightings) videos circulating on the net, but this video of a supposed kuntilanak sighting has gone incredibly viral over the past few days as it could be the clearest penampakan video of a kuntilanak yet.
The video, which was first shared by Facebook user Muhammad Adiant on January 5, has been shared over 19,000 times on Facebook alone at the time of writing. The video shows a white spectral figure emerging from a street lamp on the top left corner and floating before it disappears. Meanwhile, a bunch of men appear to be engaged in a gang brawl underneath (media reports say the brawl was between the residents of Manggarai versus the residents of Tambak in Jakarta).
OP believes that the white figure is a kuntilanak. For those not well-versed in Indonesian folklore, a kuntilanak is said to be the vengeful spirit of a woman who died while pregnant. It commonly takes the form of a bird and sucks the blood of virgins or young women. There have, of course, been numerous depictions of the kuntilanak in terrible Indonesian horror films like this one:
See the resemblance between the kuntilanak in the trailer and in the sighting video above? Neither do we, to be honest. Sure, upon first viewing this video had us spooked, but after repeat viewings, it seems more and more likely to us that there’s a rational explanation behind the white apparition, such as it being vape smoke (which are usually very thick, as vape enthusiasts will gladly attest to) or even a floating plastic bag.
But the most common theory floating around in the post’s comments section is that it is actually a kuntilanak who is fleeing the scene because she was scared of getting hurt in the gang brawl. We certainly wouldn’t hold it against her if that were the case, as gang brawls in Jakarta can indeed turn deadly.
Well, kuntilanak or not, we hope this video can at least spook gang brawlers and discourage them from beating each other senseless. If they think they can just move their fights to the day, then they should also watch this video of a supposed kuntilanak sighting in broad daylight.
