KRL Commuterline to erase ‘free out’ privilege in bid to keep freeloaders out

Frequent KRL Commuterline users probably know about the free out privilege, in which passengers won’t be charged if they exit the same station they entered within an hour of tapping their tickets or KRL Multi Trip cards through the entrance gate.

Sadly, that privilege will be gone starting tomorrow as some cheapskates have been taking advantage of it to score free rides.

PT KRL Commuterline Jakarta First Director Muhammad Nurul Fadhila explained that some passengers had found a loophole in the system. These people would first tap in to enter the train platform. Then, they’d tap out at the exit without actually leaving the platform, and would board the next train.

They would then do the same at their destination station.

“From what we’ve observed lately, the free out facility is being misused, and it represents a loophole for free riders,” Muhammad said, as quoted by Republika today.

The free out privilege was definitely useful for passengers who, for whatever reason, decided not to get on a train after tapping into the train station. It was especially useful for when there are lengthy delays or even train cancellations.

But thanks to the actions of an irresponsible few, that privilege will no longer be available starting tomorrow.
