Condoms and chocolate are probably the two products that receive a huge spike in sales leading up to Valentine’s Day. But the two being sold together in one package at your local minimarket is apparently problematic to some people.
One group that has a problem with the choco-condom bundle is the Commission on the Protection of Indonesian Children (KPAI).
“We have found chocolates sold [in a package] with condoms in several minimarkets and supermarkets. This could be a marketing ploy in the lead up to Valentine’s Day,” said KPAI Deputy Chairwoman Maria Advianti yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.
Maria is worried that the combo packages would wrongly fall into the hands of children and teenagers.
“Does love have to always be sexual? We have to educate children on a massive scale so they don’t fall into this understanding [about love] that is being exploited by corporations,” she said.
The chocolate/condom package was first found in Malang, East Java. But Maria said the KPAI has also spotted the product in Jakarta. Customers would often have to ask for them, as they are usually not on display in minimarkets.
The KPAI will request to the government to ban the product.
