This is a toy train, not the real train. The real train will probably be bigger.
State-owned train company PT Kereta Api Indonesia is completing the restoration of Indonesia’s first electric train, which was built in 1920, so that it can be used to shuttle tourists around Jakarta’s historic Kota Tua district.
“We’re going to bring back the first electric train, which is named Bonbon,” said Ella Ubaidi, Vice President of Conservation, Maintenance and Architecture Design at PT Kereta Api in Bandung on Sunday.
Ella said the Bonbon train was made in 1920 and operated in Jakarta in the 1950s. After the train restoration is completed it will be used on a trial route between Jakarta and Depok. “It hasn’t been unveiled yet because it’s feasibility certification has not been issued yet.” Ella said.
According to Ella, KAI is waiting for work to finish on the rail line reactivation between Kota Station in West Jakarta and Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, which is currently underway. “There will be a tourist train that operates on Saturday and Sunday or by request in Jakarta. The route will be Ancol-Jakarta Kota-Tanjung Priok, to tour Kota Tua,” said Ella.
According to Ella, PT Kereta Api still waiting for the green light from the Director General of the Railway to begin operation of the restored electric train. She also said the trains schedule will be adjusted so as not to interfere with Jakarta’s commuter train traffic.
