The eviction of slum dwellers from Kampung Pulo in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, required a great deal of force. Now that the Kampung Pulo saga is mostly behind us, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has set his sights to evict slum dwellers in Bukit Duri, Tebet, South Jakarta.
Ahok is making sure that the evicted slum dwellers will have a place to live in the form of two rent-free apartment buildings the government is building specifically for them.
“For the [apartment building] in Cibesel, I believe there are 160 apartment units, whereas the other one in Pulo Gebang has 150 units if I’m not mistaken,” Ahok said at City Hall today, as quoted by Merdeka.
Ahok said he can’t yet determine when the Bukit Duri evictions will take place. He wants to make sure the Kampung Pulo transition is completely finished before taking on another eviction project.
