Jombang district head steals attendance machine to extend holiday with employees

It was rather unfortunate that December 31 and January 1 fell on a Saturday and Sunday, meaning that there was no government mandated holiday beyond that weekend. Some people worked around this problem by taking leave days before and/or after the New Year weekend, but they weren’t nearly as devious as a district head in Indonesia who came up with an, admittedly, clever plan to extend his holiday. Well, until he got caught, that is.

The government official in question is Sugiyanto, who was the head of the Plandaan district in the Jombang regency of East Java. On Friday, December 30, Sugiyanto and several of his subordinates took a trip to Telaga Sarangan in Magetan regency. Among the items that Sugiyanto took with him was his office’s fingerprint scanner attendance recording machine, which he allegedly used to register his and his holiday buddies’ attendances after the New Year’s weekend.

Sure, Sugiyanto may have broken the law here, but at least he did it so that he could be a cool boss, right? Well, it turns out not all of his employees went with him, and those left behind weren’t able to clock out in the afternoon after Sugiyanto and his pals had already left for their trip and took the attendance machine with them.

“I wasn’t able to go on the trip because I had other things to take care of, so I wasn’t able to clock out [because the machine was gone],” said Sutrisno, a Satpol PP officer working at the Plandaan district office, as quoted by Tribun yesterday.

Needless to say, people soon found out where the attendance machine went. The Jombang Regency Administration is currently investigating into the case.

It’s not yet known what punishment Sugiyanto would receive for his alleged attendance machine larceny and fraud, but he is no longer the district head for Plandaan… after being promoted to become Jombang regency’s secretary of the Trade and Industry Agency on January 3. We wonder if he’s going to hold his new post for much longer.
