Jokowi talks up Indonesia’s Anglophilia during UK visit: “Man Utd VS Arsenal causes arguments in Indonesia”

Where do most Indonesian men go late in the evening on weekends? Why, to watch football English Premier League matches on TV, of course.

That is the picture President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo painted about Indonesians’ love of all things English during his state visit to the UK yesterday.

“In Indonesia, Manchester United VS Arsenal can be the cause of arguments among family members,” Jokowi said in a speech in front of the UK Parliament, as quoted by BBC Indonesia.

“We know the lyrics to the songs of One Direction, Genesis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Iron Maiden.”

Jokowi added that he hopes Indonesian-UK relations can be strengthened and he encouraged Britons to visit Indonesia more regularly.

“Come to Indonesia, but not just Bali. Fly on Garuda Indonesia, which now flies directly from London to Jakarta,” he said.

Jokowi is staying in the UK until today as part of his European tour to strengthen ties with EU nations.
