Jet skier drowns after getting tangled in aquatic plants in Sunter Lake

Liong Suherman, 37, tragically drowned in the depths of the Sunter Lake in North Jakarta after he fell off a jet ski.

Liong’s body was recovered Monday at around 9pm.

“The victim was discovered at a depth of 6 meters. According to rescue officers who found him, the victim was tangled up in aquatic plants while standing [on the lake bed],” said Satriadi Gunawan, head of North Jakarta’s Fire Rescue department, as quoted by Merdeka today.

Satriadi added that Liong, who worked as a mechanic, wanted to try out jet skiing with his friend on Sunter Lake.

Liong fell into the water when his friend, who was driving the jet ski, made a sharp turn.

“The victim couldn’t swim and he wasn’t wearing a life vest,” Satriadi said.

Navy divers and members of the National Search and Rescue Agency were deployed to find Liong. Sadly, he was already dead when rescuers found him on Monday evening.
