Jakarta’s city to Soekarno-Hatta Airport train is seemingly so on track to meet its projected July launch that the operators can already estimate how much one ride will cost.

According to Heru Kuswanto, first director of PT Railink, the company chosen to operate the city-airport train service, the fare for a single ride will cost more than Rp 100,000.

By comparison, the city of Medan’s airport train – the first of its kind in Indonesia – charges passengers Rp 100,000 per trip.

The Jakarta airport train will transport passengers from Manggarai Station in South Jakarta, making stops at Sudirman Baru, Duri, and Batu Ceper before arriving at Soekarno-Hatta.

A trip from Manggarai to the airport using ride sharing services like Uber or Grab costs around Rp 100,000, though that’s not including toll road fees. A taxi ride for the same trip is slightly more expensive than that.

With price competition in mind, Heru hopes that they can still lower the airport train fare.

“The most likely solution is if the government steps in to provide subsidy, that way the fare would be cheaper,” he said, as quoted by Merdeka yesterday.

PT Railink estimates that the airport train would be able to carry 33,000 passengers daily in 124 trips. A single trip from Manggarai to Soekarno-Hatta is predicted to take 54 minutes.

From the outset, PT Railink will not make tickets available for purchase via cash transaction. Instead, passengers will have to pay electronically using cards issued by the country’s 10 largest banks.
