Car Free Day (CFD), aka the one time of the week when intoxicating car fumes on Jakarta’s main commercial thoroughfare is replaced with joggers, Brompton riders, and street food hunters, has been canceled for at least the next two weeks.
The announcement was made by Governor Anies Baswedan today, who said that the weekly event has been canceled as a precaution against the global coronavirus outbreak.
“After two weeks, we’ll evaluate the situation,” Anies told reporters at City Hall, as quoted by Detik.
CFD is held every Sunday morning on Jalan Sudirman and Jalan MH Thamrin in Jakarta, during which all motorized vehicles are banned from 6am to 10am.
As in many parts of the world, many major events, including concerts, in Jakarta have been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. One of the most major events to be postponed indefinitely in the capital is the Formula E race, which was scheduled for June 6.
Indonesia had 27 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, but one patient, a 53-year-old female foreigner, died this morning, the government announced. She was the first person to die from the illness in the country.
