Love it or hate it, the 3-in-1 carpooling scheme on Jakarta’s main roads in the central business district may return after all following its trial removal last month.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency has finished their evaluation of the trial removal and their conclusion is that it should probably be brought back, at least partly.
According to the agency, there was a 24.35% increase in the number of vehicles on 3-in-1 zones between April 5 to 13 (when the trial removal was in effect). However, they noted that morning traffic was relatively lighter compared to afternoon traffic during this time.
Therefore, the agency is recommending that the Jakarta Provincial Government reinstate the 3-in-1, at least for the afternoon/evening rush between 4:30pm to 8pm.
In addition, the agency is also recommending the expansion of a motorcycle ban, which has been rumored to be in the works for some time.
“We’re also recommending the expansion of the motorcycle ban from Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat to Jalan MH Thamrin (where a motorcycle ban is currently in effect) to Jalan Sudirman [up to Senayan Roundabout],” said Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri Yansyah, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.
